All Hallows Eve

All Hallows Eve

By Robin Lee Shelby

There is a quietness on All Hallows Eve
That makes a menace of all the trees
Spectres await the souls of mortal fools
Who try to act like ghosts and ghouls

The Autumn wind blows from the North
And chills all those who dare go forth
It howls its way through the countryside
Making children of all ages hide

Trick-or-Treat is the battle cry
That is often heard from countless small fry
Witches and ghosts; goblins and ghouls
All of them not yet out of school

Bobbing for apples, candies galore
Upsetting the barrel at the store
The wagon placed on top of the school
Mischief and bedlam are the rule

We were all once young and carefree
And that’s how it really should be
A time to let off a little steam
Something about which we could dream
